With the installation of an interlock kit, you can safely utilize your backup or portable generator during a power outage. The kit effectively shuts off the main circuit breaker, allowing electricity to flow exclusively through the generator circuit breaker. Once power is restored to your home or business, the interlock kit will deactivate the generator circuit breaker and turn the main circuit breaker back on.
If you have a portable generator and intend to use it as a home backup power solution, installing a generator interlock kit is essential. These kits play a vital role in ensuring that your generator activates and operates safely when your home loses power. At Texas Backup Power Solutions, which caters to the greater Houston, Texas region, our team of licensed and skilled electricians is available to assist you in selecting the correct generator interlock kit and completing the installation. This guarantees that you will remain powered during an outage.
Texas Backup Power Solutions is ready to assist with the installation of a portable generator interlock kit in the greater Houston, Texas area. Feel free to call us or contact us online to arrange a service appointment with one of our experienced and licensed electricians.
Initially, an efficient home generator installation demands careful planning. Our residential electricians will analyze your power needs to propose the correctly sized generator—choices include smaller units that energize specific circuits and larger home generators that can run the whole house. Texas Backup Power Solutions will pinpoint the ideal location for the unit, factoring in noise levels, exhaust, clearance requirements, and local regulations in the Greater Houston area. Additionally, the fuel source, generally natural gas or propane, must be securely connected by certified professionals.
The next phase is the electrical integration, which is a significant step handled by one of our specialized electrical contractors. This process involves installing the automatic transfer switch, the system’s brain, which disconnects your home from the grid during outages and connects it to the backup generators. The generator installation includes running appropriately gauged electrical wiring from the generator to the transfer switch and then to your main electrical panel repair. Lastly, thorough testing ensures that the system functions automatically as intended when utility power is disrupted.

Before any portable generator interlock installation, the licensed electricians at Texas Backup Power Solutions perform a thorough inspection of your electrical panel system to ensure it is safe, code-compliant, and capable of handling backup power. This inspection is critical because not all panels are compatible with interlock kits, and issues like overloaded breakers, improper grounding, outdated equipment, or previous DIY modifications can create serious safety risks.
By evaluating panel capacity, breaker layout, and overall condition ahead of time, our licensed electricians can identify potential problems early and recommend the right solution—whether that’s a panel upgrade, breaker replacement, or layout adjustment. This proactive step helps protect your home, your generator, and utility line workers while ensuring your backup power system operates reliably when you need it most.
After completing the inspection and installing your portable generator interlock kit, an expert from Texas Backup Power Solutions will walk you through the results of the inspection and explain any recommendations for your electrical panel.
Once the interlock kit is installed, we don’t just leave—you’ll receive hands-on guidance from our licensed electrician on how to safely and properly operate your generator with the interlock system. Our goal is to make sure you feel confident and informed every step of the way.
